One of the many challenges that first year science course faced is how to provide an intimate learning environment with immediate targeted feedback to 600+ students in an efficient manner. I designed and implemented a new assessment technique called a “two-stage collaborative assessment” in our first year general chemistry course. In a two-stage format, students first complete and hand in the quiz/test/exam individually. Then, students work collaboratively in a group of four students to answer the quiz/test/exam questions again. During the group portion of the tutorial, the room is filled with excitement and debate, which motivates more students to actively participate in the discussion. This new assessment format provides students with immediate targeted feedback through discussion with their peers. In this discussion, we will focus on the challenges I face in creating and delivering a two-stage collaborative assessment and explore possible solutions to address these challenges.
